NUN Meetings Dr. Leyla Şahin Usta
February 28th is sadly remembered by a process that violates individual freedom and fundamental human rights. It is a time that people must never forget and should pass on to future generations to ensure they are never exposed to such situations again. For the occasion of the date it corresponds to, we hosted Dr. Leyla Şahin Usta at our school. Coming together with our high school students, Usta handed down her experiences on February 28. "As we have always said, February 28 did not last thousands of years but the struggle against such oppressive mindsets would continue for millennia. It is what matters to keeping the flame of resistance alive and passing on the lessons of this struggle to future generations. We shared with today's young students and the futures of this country, that we have been tried to be fettered, however, the shackles to our beliefs and values were laid on each and every anniversary, for 27 years without damaging even a single paving stone of the state." By these words, she emphasized the need to educate our youth about the importance of individual freedom and the fight for one's faith and values.
Our students gained a deeper understanding of the 28th of February's significance in Turkey's democratic journey and the importance of the resilience of the human spirit. Dr. Usta's talk left a lasting impression on our students, instilling in them a sense of responsibility to stand up for what they believe in and never let their voices be silenced.
