What Fixes Our Heartbreaks?” Workshop with Elif Yemenici

NUN Elementary School students met writer and illustrator of Eyvah Kalbim Kırıldı book Elif Yemenici in a workshop; they talked about how to fix heartbreaks and looked for solutions.
Writer and illustrator Elif Yemenici fixed heartbreaks of so many children with her first book Eyvah Kalbim Kırıldı and today came together with NUN elementary school students. In the first session, KG, first and second grade students attended the first session; they watch a short film and talked about the book.
Yemenici asked “what fixes your heartbreaks?” and all students drew their solution on heart shaped papers. A student draw a clock and wrote “time” whereas another student wrote “petting my cat” and draw his cat; the fact that most of the drawings focused on friendship, fellowship and family was nice.
In the next session, third and forth grades interviewed about “writing and being a writer”. There were exciting questions such as “Why did you choose sadness among emotions?”, “How do you create your internal discipline to write?” whereas some questions like “Didn’t you get tired while writing such a big book?” or “Are these real or your imagination?” made us smile.
At the end of the program Yemenici stated that “My heart was broken when I was writing this book. My heart melted when I think of writing a story and illustrate it so that it will reach out to you.” It helped our students to see the effects of writing a story and how books touch people’s hearts. When the students were leaving the library, they were very excited to write “new books.”
