“Diriliş” Crew: “Knowing History is Everyone’s Fundamental Duty.”

The guests of the final NUN Meetings of the year were from “Diriliş” series; producer and scriptwriter Mehmet Bozdağ, actors Ayberk Pekcan and Orhan Kılıç. In the panel, the moderators were our students and the distinguished role of “Diriliş” on Turkish television and the responsibility of knowing and sharing history are elaborated.

The panel started with Mehmet Bozdağ and he told the story of “Diriliş”Bozdağ stated that when he was a BA student in History department, he wrote an article about the 13th century which was the beginning of this project without being noticed and since then he has been seeking an answer to the question: “What makes this land ‘ours’?” The scriptwriter remarks that “Diriliş” is an answer to this question and “we wanted to remind our strength, our economic and political structure, our polity that made us one of the most powerful states in the world. While doing this, we pay attention to present all the details like man-woman relationships, dialogues to reflect our civilization.”

Bozdağ emphasized that while building the “Diriliş” philosophy, they were enriched by the views of important personages such as Sezai Karakoç, Necip Fazıl on our country. He explained the responsibility they took as follows: “If we don’t know history, we cannot build ‘today’. If we want this country to break grounds again on discoveries and inventions, our responsibility is to narrate and remind the right examples from the history. Knowing the history is everyone’s fundamental duty.”

Ayberk Pekcan is Hekim Artuk Bey in the series and he started as follows: “Diriliş, is one of the works that I relate myself the most as a Muslim Turk.” He explained that the success of “Diriliş” is based on the fact that “the preparatory period was longer than the production.” He underlined how they took swordplay and horse riding courses for six months, the script was written in maximum diligence, a long period to work on script was provided to the actors before the filming were the facts that qualified the project.

The crew answered the young students’ questions with sincerity and gave some advices for the ending. Orhan Kılıç, Atsız in the series, said: “Each one of you have a responsibility for the future, be brave to take action!” and Mehmet Bozdağ gave hope and motivation to our students by saying: “We make Diriliş series. You will establish the Turkey in the future, make it real!”
