Directorate of State Archives Visit

Our middle school students visited the Ottoman Archives, part of the Directorate of State Archives, one of the most significant memory institutions of our civilization. Under expert guidance, they explored how state memory is constructed and preserved, gaining insight into the concept of “state consciousness.”
Throughout the program, our students were accompanied and guided by Merve Dönmez, Assistant Specialist for the Archives. By examining original documents, students reinforced their theoretical knowledge of Ottoman Turkish and learned about archival preservation techniques and why such documents are researched.
A particularly meaningful moment was when students submitted their own written reflections to be preserved within the archive—leaving a lasting mark within this historic institution. This experience strengthened their historical awareness and provided a concrete understanding of how knowledge and memory are preserved across generations.
